The sanctuary is one of the most ecologically important wetlands in the Philippines. It is home to almost 200 bird species, and was home to "Lolong", the world's largest crocodile caught in captivity measuring over 20 feet long.

This site in Esperanza marks the location where the Golden Tara, a golden statue of the Hindu-Buddhist goddess Tara, was excavated in the early 1917. The Centennial Bitaug Tree is believed to be the oldest tree Philippines. It is an approximately 500-year-old Bitaog (Calophyllum inophyllum) with diameter of 290cm. The tree was once known as a haven for fireflies, which once served as an glowing marker for fishermen who set out at night time.

Agusan River is the Philippines' third-longest river. It is one of the river destinations being eyed as an emerging ecotourism destination.
