Mt. Makiling Review

Submitted by eric on Sun, 03/13/2022 - 22:15
Description

The mystical, magical Mount Makiling was declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2013. While classified as an inactive stratovolcano, it still shows signs of geothermal activity as seen in the presence of mud springs and hot springs in the mountain. The mountain rises to an elevation of 1,090 meters above mean sea level and is the highest feature of the Laguna Volcanic Field. It is regarded sacred by many who believe that the mountain is home to a supernatural deity named Maria Makiling.

Corregidor Island Review

Submitted by eric on Sun, 03/13/2022 - 21:27
Description

Corregidor Island is one of the country's most important historical landmarks. Located just 48 kilometers from Manila, it was a key strategic defense location during the Spanish colonial rule up to World War II. Its strategic location was used to defend the entry point to Manila Bay and the city of Manila itself, which served as the Philippines' most oimportant seaport and seat of government during the colonial rule of Spain, the United States, and Japan. It is comprised of several islands: Corregidor (Fort Mills), which is the largest of the islands, El Fraile (Fort Drum), Caballo Island (Fort Hughes), and Carabao Island (Fort Frank). The island also housed a small military airfield. The ruins now serve as a memorial dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives on the battlefield, especially during World War II when the island was heavily attacked during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from Japanese colonial rule.

San Juan

Submitted by eric on Sun, 02/20/2022 - 01:08
Description

San Juan is a hub of history, heritage and culture which largely shaped its formation as a city. Traditionally named after St. John of the Mountain, pertaining to its patron saint St. John the Baptist, one of the city's most distinct attractions is its annual Wattah Wattah Festival or Basaan Festival (dousing of water) during the feast of the aforementioned saint. It is also the site of several historical points of interest, old Spanish colonial houses that show traces of old world grandeur, as well as a mix of both upscale and bargain retail finds and dining options.
